sister-in-law

sister-in-law
This relationship term is rarely used vocatively, especially in modern times, though in the formal drawing-room conversations of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries it was perhaps more common. A special situation can bring about its use, however. In A Woman Called Fancy, by Frank Yerby, a man who wishes to remind his sister-in-law of that relationship addresses her by both her full married title - Mrs Tyler Brantley - and as ‘my dear sister-in-law’.
